How are Internal Name (Name) and Player Facing Name (Title) different when configuring challenges in SocialPoint?

Updated over a week ago

Quick Answer

The Internal Name (previously called “Name”) is the label used only by admins inside the SocialPoint dashboard (35-character limit). The Player Facing Name (previously called “Title”) is the name shown to participants during gameplay (50-character limit).

Both fields are required when creating or uploading a challenge.

What Is the Difference Between Internal Name and Player Facing Name?

Internal Name (Name)

  • Visible only to admins in the dashboard

  • Used for organizing and identifying challenges internally

  • Limited to 35 characters

  • Does not appear to participants

Player Facing Name (Title)

  • Visible to participants during gameplay

  • Controls how the challenge is presented to your audience

  • Limited to 50 characters

  • Appears anywhere the challenge name is displayed to players

In short:
Internal Name = backend label
Player Facing Name = display name shown to players

Where Do I Find These Fields?

  1. Go to Challenges in your SocialPoint dashboard.

  2. Click Edit on the challenge you want to configure.

  3. Locate the Internal Name (Name) field.

  4. Locate the Player Facing Name (Title) field.

  5. Enter values for both fields (both are required).

  6. Click Save.

You cannot publish or upload a challenge without completing both fields.

Why Do I Still See “Name” and “Title” in Excel or Google Sheets?

We are currently updating terminology across the platform.

In some areas — such as the Excel uploader and Google Sheet templates — you may still see the older labels:

  • Name = Internal Name

  • Title = Player Facing Name

These refer to the same required fields. Even if the wording differs, both columns must be completed when uploading challenges.

What Happens When You Edit Each Field?

If You Edit the Internal Name

  • Only the admin dashboard label updates.

  • Participants will not see this change.

If You Edit the Player Facing Name

  • The challenge name updates for participants.

  • The new name appears wherever the challenge is displayed during gameplay.

Changes take effect after you click Save. Players may need to refresh their session to see updates.

Character Limits

  • Internal Name (Name): 35 characters maximum

  • Player Facing Name (Title): 50 characters maximum

If you exceed the character limit, the system will require you to shorten the text before saving or uploading.

Common Issues / Troubleshooting

I received an upload error when using Excel or Google Sheets

  • Make sure both Name (Internal Name) and Title (Player Facing Name) columns are filled in.

  • Verify that neither field exceeds its character limit.

  • Confirm there are no blank required fields in your sheet.

My challenge name looks wrong to participants

  • Check that you edited the Player Facing Name, not the Internal Name.

  • Click Save after making changes.

  • Ask participants to refresh their browser if needed.

Can I leave one of the fields blank?

No. Both the Internal Name and Player Facing Name fields are required when creating or uploading a challenge.

Best Practices

  • Keep the Internal Name short and descriptive for easier backend organization.

  • Make the Player Facing Name clear and engaging for participants.

  • If helpful, you may use similar wording in both fields — but they serve different purposes.
