Why does my Trivia game have a Manage button instead of a Play button?

Why does my game have a Manage button instead of a Play button?

Updated this week

Quick Answer

If your game shows a Manage button instead of a Play button, it means your game is set up as a Self-Paced Quiz, not a Live Trivia game.

The Play button appears only for Live Trivia games that are hosted in real time. Self-paced games use the Manage button because players access the game through a Player Link instead of a live host session.

What’s the Difference Between Play and Manage?

Play Button (Live Trivia)

The Play button appears when your game type is set to Live Trivia.

Live Trivia games:

  • Are hosted in real time

  • Require a host to control the flow of questions

  • Display a live leaderboard during gameplay

  • Use a host screen to present questions

When you click Play, you are launching the live host interface.

Manage Button (Self-Paced Quiz)

The Manage button appears when your game type is set to a Self-Paced Quiz.

Self-paced games:

  • Do not require a live host

  • Allow players to complete the quiz on their own time

  • Use a Player Link for access

  • Automatically track scores

When you click Manage, you are accessing the Game Manager where you can:

  • View results

  • Reset gameplay

  • Adjust settings

  • Access player data

How Do I Check What Type of Game I Created?

  1. Go to Trivia Home.

  2. Locate your game.

  3. Click the game name to open its settings.

  4. Check the Game Type setting (Live Trivia or Self-Paced).

If it is set to Self-Paced, the button will display Manage.
If it is set to Live Trivia, the button will display Play.

Can I Switch from Self-Paced to Live Trivia?

No. You must create a new game. Follow the wizard and create a new game.

Common Issues

I expected to host this live, but I only see Manage

Your game was likely created as a Self-Paced Quiz. You will need to create a new live trivia game.

I don’t see an option to change the Game Type

We don't allow you to change the game type.
